Common Viruses vs Common Sense
2009
Are you scared of opening your e-Mail? Or are you the one that will go as far as opening any and ever executable (”.exe”) from anybody who e-Mails you? Well, it’s time for you to know just how concerned you should be about your computer’s security, and how to overrule those common viruses with common sense!
If you are the one who open’s everything without even thinking, well consider at least checking the extensions! If you are getting executable files from random people that you don’t even know, DO NOT OPEN THEM! If you are getting executable viruses from people you do know, try scanning them with an online file scanner (http://novirusthanks.org/). The file will be scanned with 25+ Anti-Virus applications, and if the threat level is 0%, then you should be safe. You may think, “Why shouldn’t I trust my friend’s?”. Well, this could be a virus in which attach’s an executable to every e-Mail, or even send it’s very own e-Mails!
Note: Executables are not the only types of viruses, extensions like .scr (screen-saver) can also be viruses. Pictures and movies are very unlikely to be viruses, but if you are still unsure, you can scan them online!
Are you the guy who is too scared to even open his e-Mail? Well it’s good to be conscious about computer security, but really, it just comes down to common sense. Keep your computer and applications updated! This is something many people fail to do, and it is the main cause of being hacked (other then private exploits and social engineering). Usually, on most updates, a security problem will be patched along with a few other viewable things. Most of the time, a company will work on updates for an application slowly, then once a security flaw has been found in it, they will patch that bug and then release the update all in one (so you don’t get scared that their stuff may not be so secure!).
