I’ve met many people over the ages of 30 who do not know of simple techniques to effectively clean up their computers. Most people that I have met from the ages of 15-25 know most of the techniques I am about to show you. This will accomplish cleaning up your computer (probably speeding things up), and even providing extra security!

The first thing I am going to inform you about, is cookies. These are not the things that come in all types of flavors, but the ones on your computer that store critical information like passwords! Cookies are mostly used in authentication for log-ins. If a hacker compromises your computer, and you do not clear your cookies frequently, they could decrypt these cookies, thus getting very important details!

Now, for clearing cookies:
In browsers like Firefox, the best way to do it is to go to Tools, then “Clear Private Data” (shortcut is Crtl+Shift+Del). Now, make sure you check the cookies box, and hit “Clear Private Data Now”.
For browsers like Internet explorer, first quit the Internet (open this site in a different browser so you can keep following these directions!
Click on Start, now go to “Run”. Now type “inetcpl.cpl” and hit enter.
Now, under the General tab, click delete under the browsing history in the Internet properties dialog box. Make sure to click “clear cookies”. Now, just hit delete!

Make sure to clear you cookies on a daily basis.

Now, lets quickly make sure everything is up-to-date. Why update? This is the easiest, nad very most crucial part of computer security! Do this by going to Start, then Control Panel. Under “Security”, click “Check for updates”. I would recommend updating anything that says “recommended”, and of course definitely update anything under the priority of “important“. If it is a slow update, don’t cancel it. Delay it for a few hours until you go to bed, delaying for days on end is not secure!

These were some basic ways to keep a clean and secure computer, more articles on this Topic will be further discussed in the future!

Having a slow computer is always bad news. Having to wait for things to load and not being to accomplish things in the needed time frame. Here are 8 ways to help improve your computers overall performance and make your computer’s speed where it needs to be!

1.Clear out the junk

Doing some basic housekeeping on your computer can have a positive effect on your computer’s performance. You can manually clear out your browser’s history, cache, cookies, and offline website data. Since we recommend using Firefox, all you have to do is load Firefox go to Tools>Clear Private Data. You can then clear most things out. It is also good to use a program like CCleaner. It allows you to clean your registry, web browser and more. You should also uninstall programs that you no longer use. It is good to use an uninstall program because when you uninstall programs in Windows with the built in uninstaller it leaves small files behind that can slow down your computer significantly over time. Revo Uninstaller is a popular uninstaller used for this. Cleaning up unused icons off your desktop can improve performance too. You can make folders to hold your shortcuts to clear up space. Doing this is easy and can make your computer run better.

2.Shut off unneeded services and start-up programs

You might not notice, but when you initially log onto your computer, multiple unneeded programs and services start up when your Operating system is loaded. Some go to the system tray while others run in the background without you knowing. To fix this problem you can use a program like SpeedupMyPC

Or we can use the utility built into Windows called Msconfig. To use Msconfig simply go to start>run>type in “Msconfig” then hit ok. Once you are using the utility you can turn the unneeded programs and services you don’t use.

3. Turn off visual effects

Windows Vista comes with some fancy animations . Unless you have a good graphics card, those little animations can eat some of your needed system resources.

In Vista, you can turn off the Aero window decorations by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting Personalize. Click the Windows Color and Appearance link, and follow the ‘Open classic appearance properties for more color options’ link at the bottom of that window. From there choose the Windows Vista Basic theme to disable the transparencies.
To make your computer performance even better, you can right-click on My Computer and select Properties. Click on Advanced System Settings and then, under the Performance section, select Settings. Here, you can disable all the unneeded animate effects and windows previews. This tip also works for Windows XP.

4. Malware

If you use Windows, you will almost always run into some virus or spyware infections.Browsing the internet wisely and keeping your software update are good precautions, but you should still scan your computer for Malware regularly. Malware is one of the biggest problems when a computer runs slow. Spybot is a good anti-spyware program. Bitdefender is one of the most popular anti-virus programs

5. Update your software and drivers

You should always keep your software and drivers updated. Doing this will keep you secure and help your computer performance.

6. Use lighter weight apps

Using lighter weight applications can improve your computer performance drastically. Using a program likePidgin instead of AOL, MSN, and Yahoo messenger can save you lots of needed system resources. Most programs have a good alternative you can use.

7. Start over, by reinstalling the OS entirely

Sometimes it is good to just reinstall the operating system. Back up all your personal data and bring out your OS installation or system recovery discs. Put them in the CD drive and follow the directions.

8. Defragment your hard drive

When files are saved on a computer they get broken up and scattered in different locations on your hard drive. This happens because, rather than re-saving an entire file, Windows only writes the new data, putting it in the hard drive’s next available empty space. At first, this improves speed. Other times the next empty spot isn’t in the same spot as the original file and your document becomes fragmented. When your files start to become more fragmented, the computer has to work harder to put all the pieces together. This results in your computer performance declining. To fix this we need to defragment the drive. When we defrag the drive it rearranges the files on your disk. It reunites the separated parts and makes your files able to be accessed quicker. Windows XP and Vista both have a built-in defragmenting solution. It is better than nothing but we suggest to use different software like Smart Defrag for best results.

One of the easiest ways for a hacker to obtain your data is through a key-logger. A key-logger, is software (sometimes it can be hardware) that captures a user's keystrokes. This means they can see everything the user types in. Examples are : passwords, credit cards, and private conversations. I am going to explain a few ways to check for key-loggers on your computer.

One of the easiest ways for a hacker to obtain your data is through a key-logger. A key-logger, is software (sometimes it can be hardware) that captures a user’s keystrokes. This means they can see everything the user types in. Examples are : passwords, credit cards, and private conversations. I am going to explain a few ways to check for key-loggers on your computer.

1. Prevent key-loggers from being installed
Always be sure to scan files before installing them on your computer. A great place to scan files is http://virustotal.com. Virustotal is a site that checks files for viruses, worms, trojans, and all kinds of malware detected by antivirus engines.

2. Use updated anti-virus or anti-spy-ware software

Most of the time a good anti-virus software will detect most key-loggers. Be sure to keep your software up to date and scan your computer regularly.

3. Use special anti-key-logger software
Sometimes for better results, you can use an anti-key-logger program. One of the most popular anti-key-logger programs is ThreatFire. There are plenty of different anti-key-logger programs to choose from though.

4. Check for key-loggers yourself
If you are a more advanced computer user you can try finding key-loggers your self. You can find them by using registry editor or process explorer. It can get pretty hard to find advanced keyloggers though.

Here are some advanced types of anti-key-loggers:

Panda Security Home Page
ZoneAlarm Security Suite
