The recent discovery that the UK’s newspaper, News of the World had hacked into the voicemails of murder victims, relatives of soldiers killed in the Iraq War and the families of victims of the 7/7 London bombings, made everyone stop and think about social media and privacy, in particular, how safe is my mobile data?

Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you would have heard that the newspaper shut down in July of this year and senior executives and journalists from the paper and its parent company, News International, have since continued to resign, be arrested or called before parliament to explain their involvement.

As more and more social networking sites pop up (Google + the most recent), and the average time spent on social networking sites via our mobile devices increases, are you aware of just how much information is stored on your smartphone? And are you confident that you know what you are sharing and to whom?

A recent study by analytics company Compete (www.complete.com) found that 43% of Twitter users and 34% of Facebook users access their accounts using their mobile devices.

Similarly, a study completed by TNS discovered that nearly a third of Brits (32%) with mobile phones visit all social networks from their handset – that’s 11 million Brits!

Furthermore, 16% of mobile phone owners say they access social networks from their handset every day.

So how can you protect that valuable information you store on your smartphone?

Here are a few tips to bear in mind regarding security;

1) Use Passwords
Yes this may seem obvious, but always password-protect your mobile and don’t choose a password that may be easy for others to guess.

Most phones can be set so it will automatically delete all information if the incorrect password is entered too many times in a row. You can however retrieve this data from your computer – that is if you have been regularly synchronising.

2) Enable auto-lock
Enable your auto-lock feature so it will kick in after a minute or two. This will make sure no one can use the phone without having to enter your password.

3) Back it up
Only keep information you’ll need regularly in your phone. When syncing your phone, it will also automatically synchronise any notes you have in your contacts database, so don’t store important user names and passwords in these notes fields.

Make sure you keep a record of your data somewhere safe that includes the phone’s make, model, and serial number so if your phone is lost or stolen, you can quickly change your passwords.

4) Install a mobile tracking app
You might want to install a tracking application on your smartphone to enable you to track it. Here are a few popular tracking apps;

iPhone – FoneHome, Bar Heist, MobileMe
BlackBerry – Berry Locator
Android – Android Lost, Wheres My Droid

5) Erase your personal data remotely
You can download an application that will allow you to remote access your smartphone from a PC. That way you can remotely remove any confidential data stored on it.

6) Lock confidential applications
Another way to protect important data on your smartphone is to use an application locker.

They will prevent unauthorised access to applications that contain sensitive personal information, such as your messages, contacts, email and photos.

If someone finds or steals your phone, they cannot access these protected apps without the correct password, and if you had already downloaded a remote access app, you will also be able to remove any confidential data.

7) Think twice before jailbreaking your iphone
Some iPhone users jailbreak (or unlock) their phones so they can install applications Apple hasn’t approved…But be warned! This opens up your phone to substantial corruptions, such as viruses or internet scams. The only way to then remove these harmful software threats (or ‘malware’), is to wipe the phone’s memory and revert to its original factory settings. You may also be refused service by Apple if your phone is unlocked.

However, just because your iPhone is still locked, does not make you immune to nasty files. According to Apple, they reject more than 100 spyware-infested or phishing-laden applications every day (these are fake versions of real applications designed to steal your personal information). The more sophisticated hackers get, the more malware about.

It has been estimated that worldwide smartphone sales will surpass PC sales worldwide by the end of 2011, but whether you’re using a mobile device or a PC, here are 10 tips to consider regarding your security on social networking sites in general:

1. Accept friend requests only from people you know personally

2. Think twice before you post
Remember, status updates, photos, videos and comments can reveal more about you than you may have intended.
For example, you may have heard some horror stories about people who had posted about their holiday only to find they had been burgled when they returned.

UK company Precreate Solutions has come up with a solution – for a small fee they will run “virtual updates” for their clients whilst away.

Bear in mind also that geolocation applications share your exact location, also letting criminals know that you aren’t home.

3. Don’t provide too many details about you online
Try not to share too much personal information about yourself – things like your middle name, first pet’s name, the name of the street you grew up in, etc are often used by financial institutions to verify your identity.

4. Regularly check your privacy settings
The default settings for some sites may allow anyone to see your profile, but you can customise your settings to restrict access to only certain people. Some social networking sites have been known to change their options periodically, so review your security and privacy settings regularly to make sure you are still secure.

5. Be wary of applications that request permission to access your data
Third party applications can make life easier, but bear in mind that when you accept, this means the party can obtain your email address, post to your wall, and can access your information at any time; even if you are no longer using the application.

You can however modify your settings to limit the amount of information the applications can access.

6. Be wary of fake links and apps
A great example of this was seen on Facebook; you may have seen a post that claimed to be able to tell you how many profile views you have had and by whom….this was a scam.

According to Facebook’s Help Centre;
“Facebook do not provide the ability to track who is viewing your profile, or parts of your profile, such as your photos. Applications by outside developers cannot provide this functionality, either. Applications that claim to give you this ability will be removed from Facebook for violating policy. You can report applications that provide untrustworthy experiences by clicking the “Report Application” at the bottom of the application’s About page, or by clicking “Report” at the bottom of any canvas page within the application.”

There are applications that may ask you for permission to access content from your News Feed and Wall to enable you to see which friends have interacted with posts ie, which friends liked or engaged with a particular post, but not those who have viewed your profile.

Also be cautious of any message, post, or link that looks suspicious. This might be a link that requires an additional login or one that asks you to upgrade or download software – this could be an attempt to install malware that tracks and steals your data.

If you see anything suspicious, make sure you report it. You may also want to refer to security sections on the networks you use such as http://twitter.com/about/security to keep you up-to-date and aware of things to avoid.

7. Use updated browsers
Older browsers tend to have more security flaws.

8. Use strong passwords
As with your smartphone, use passwords that can’t be easily guessed. Also consider choosing unique logins and passwords for each of the social networking sites you use.

9. Keep an eye out on the url
Check the url to make sure that you are actually logging into a legitimate website. So if you’re visiting a page on Facebook, make sure the URL ends in facebook.com. For example, “en-gb.facebook.com”.

10. Make sure your security software is up to date
Make sure it includes the works – antivirus, anti-spyware, anti-spam, a firewall, and a website safety advisor.

Overall, the benefits of social media far outweigh these negatives. If you do think you have been affected, change your password immediately, delete posts/uninstall the app, inform the website administrator that you suspect a post is spam, and run a virus scan on your computer.

If you are among the thousands of people looking to download free Iphone movies, hopefully this article will be of some use to you. The Iphone’s popularity already seems set to eclipse that of the Ipod. Apple cemented their place in history with the Ipod, and by all indications look like they will be even more popular due to their latest breakthrough, the Iphone.

For reasons as yet unknown, it’s not currently possible to download movies or anything else directly onto the Iphone itself, instead, you will first need to download them to a computer and then transfer them across. This means you will of course need to have the use of a computer, and also an internet connection. Any fairly modern computer should be fine, and as far as the internet connections goes, the usual rule still applies – the faster the better!

The toughest thing about downloading Iphone movies is knowing where to get them from. True, you could get them from Itunes, and Apple are rumoured to be working on a native version of Itunes which will work on the Iphone itself and allow download of media while on the move. This will be pretty cool, but just like regular Itunes will probably cost you a fortune.

To combat this cost issue, many people currently use the file sharing or bit torrent sites to get their downloads from. This can seem good, as it’s very cost effective, but unfortunately you are breaking the law when you use these sites. That’s not even the worst part, torrent sites like this have no way of monitoring who uploads what, which makes them a real hacker’s playground. This is bad news as it means that sites like this are often the first places to begin the spread of new viruses and malware etc – the hackers simply upload their latest virus and name it as something currently popular. The downloader has no way of knowing what they are getting until it’s too late.

Not all sites are like this though, over the last year or so a far more healthy alternative has made itself known. There are now a few sites around where you can join their membership for a small fee and then get unlimited access to their downloads. These sites prove far safer and offer excellent value, and would definitely be recommended for their high speed and wide range.

This article should help you stay a little safer when looking for movie downloads for your new Iphone. Happy downloading!

Anonymous Hackers Targets Pentagon Contractor Prior to the ruling of British courts regarding the extradition of Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks site, to Sweden, a group of hackers, known as Anonymous Hackers, attacked an American Military IT company. The group threatened to seek American and British targets, in retatliation to the accusations of Mr. Assange and News International for spying on British residents. The latest target of Anonymous is “Booz Allen Hamilton”, the largest military contractor that deals with the Pentagon. In an online statement, the group declared that it was able to hack the systems of the contracting company and steal ninety thousand e-mail addresses and passwords belonging to military staff from various ranks. Moreover, leaders of this group threatened to target computer systems of the London police and British judicial, and warned that this day will be the biggest day in their history. According to analysts, Anonymous is using its attacks as means to express its anger after the News International Company’s phone hacking scandal, which forced the News of The World newspaper to shut down. Furthermore, the group wants to show its stance regarding the extradition of Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, to authorities. The group has already attacked the sites of Amazon, Bank of America, PayPal, Visa and Mastercard, for their refusal to transfer contributions to the Wikileaks account in compliance with US government orders.
Everyone loves it when lots of traffic comes through their website. In fact, many do whatever they can to achieve that traffic in hopes that someone will find what is on their site interesting and will make a purchase from the site. That’s the idea, right? Of course it is, but it is a fact that traffic of all types may not be very beneficial if it isn’t targeted traffic. However, there are ways in which traffic is brought to sites and two of these are DOS Attack and Digg Traffic. There are actual differences between the two as far as how they bring traffic to websites. Let’s just say that one is more vicious than the other.

DOS Attack

Dos Attack makes the web server beg for mercy because it is flooded with traffic that can actually be considered useless. There are different kinds of DOS Attacks such as Teardrop and Ping of Death. What these do is exploit the limitations of the TCP/IP protocols. However, there are software fixes that administrators administer to their systems to reduce the damage that is done by DOS Attacks. But just like computer viruses, there are always new attacks being created by hackers.

What these attacks do is keep the website from functioning properly and usually target large sites such as those of banks and credit card sites. The Teardrop attack sends IP fragments with huge payloads that are overlapping to the machine that they are targeting. Many operating systems are vulnerable to this type of attack and can crash the entire system.

There is also an attack called the Smurf Attack in which it floods the internet by sending packets of information to be sent to the computer hosts on a certain network. This is one of those methods in which it appears a website is receiving a lot of traffic, but none of the traffic is legitimate. SYN Flood is another that floods the servers to appear as legitimate traffic.

Digg Traffic

Digg is actually a legitimate way to generate traffic to websites. It is community-based and uses articles to gain traffic. It combines blogging, social bookmarking, and syndication with editorial control by the users. Websites and news stories are submitted by the users and a user-based ranking system is used to promote the website. It can happen that the web server is not prepared to manage that high incoming traffic and ultimately crashes the site for a short time.

However, Digg has met some controversy because it is said the users have entirely too much control over the content. There are even users who have been accused of operating what is called a “Bury Brigade” in which users mark articles as SPAM, which can bury these legitimate stories under the ones that users want to promote, whether they are legitimate or not.

The differences

The differences are rather clean in that DOS attacks are a way in which hackers maliciously flood systems with fake traffic and can actually disable use of a website. It is not a legitimate way to gain traffic, whereas Digg is a legitimate method. However, even Digg has met its controversy in which traffic can be directed away from legitimate articles due to “Bury Brigades,” which can hinder one’s ability to promote through Digg’s system. Yet as with any system on the internet, there are always ways to compromise its original intent and Digg is not an exception. DOS Attacks, on the other hand, still do what they are intended to do and that is to maliciously attack the web.

Is it time to make the ultimate switch from PC or Windows-based computers to MAC systems? Will it hurt or benefit your efforts in Internet marketing? Making a detailed comparison between the two is the best way to find out if you should stick with the old or kick it out for something new.

Are MAC computers truly that expensive?

It’s the first thing that many PC users are wary about. A lot of people acknowledge the advantages of using MAC, but many of them are also reluctant to pay for the prices that MAC laptops fetch. But are they really that expensive?

If you take a good look at the market right now, you’ll see that the price range of MAC has changed a lot compared to how it was a decade ago. Now, Apple’s MAC line includes several low and middle-end models with matching affordable price tags. If price was the one and only thing that stopped you from switching in the past, you’ll be glad to know that barrier’s finally gone.

What about user-friendliness?

Using a MAC isn’t like using a Windows-based computer. You’ll see a lot of changes and you’ll see that it takes quite some time to adjust to such changes. Whether such changes can affect your online business will, however, greatly depend on your personal adaptability: if you feel like you’re an old dog who’s not up to learning new tricks then maybe you should stick it out with your old and familiar PC and find other ways to improve your online productivity.

If, on the other hand, you’re willing to try something new and see if positive results can come out from it then you should definitely give MAC computers a try.

What about software programs?

Most people have two main concerns when it comes to software programs. Firstly, a lot of PC users are concerned that the programs they’re using right now, programs which are vital to their Internet marketing efforts, won’t work with MAC.

But here’s the great news: there’s a software utility program you can purchase for less than 0 and which will allow you to run Windows or even Linux straight from your MAC. You can even switch smoothly from MAC to Windows or vice versa with a few taps of your keyboard. Thanks to such programs, life with MAC has been made absolutely easier.

Now, what if you’re unwilling to invest in such a program? Will there be enough software programs designed for MAC use sold in the market? Surprisingly, the answer is ‘yes’. Maybe it’s just not being talked about enough and that’s why a lot of people find this surprising but the variety and depth of software programs designed for MAC is quite impressive. One possible reason for this may be because software creators find it easier to create programs for MAC; it provides fewer and lesser competition than what they should expect if they try encroaching on Microsoft’s territory.

How about security concerns?

You can expect to worry less about bugs, viruses, and spyware when you’re using MAC not because they’ve got tougher defenses but rather, it’s because hackers prefer to target Windows users since there are more and bigger fishes to fry there. Of course, there will come a time when hackers realize that the numbers of MAC users are growing and when that time comes, we’ll finally know which system is safer to use. For now, however, MAC poses fewer security problems than other PC brands.

What about performance?

We finally come to this. Among all factors to consider when making a switch, performance should have the greatest impact on your decision. Performance is what determines just how much work you’ll get to do and how quicker you can gain results from your Internet marketing efforts. If your computer isn’t performing above par then the quality and quantity of your work could easily be affected.

A number of users have voiced out their preference for MAC because they appear more reliable than others. With MAC, there are fewer chances for your work to be interrupted due to a technical glitch and error. But of course, you also have to consider what you’re going to do when such errors do occur. With other PCs, you’re probably used to the various errors that show up and you probably know already how to fix them. Can you say the same for MAC errors?

Consider these factors before making the ultimate switch…sometimes, there’s no turning back so don’t make any uncalculated risks because it’s your online business that’s at stake.

Many of us use RSS feeds to get updates from our favorite news sites or blogs; however, RSS is only available on a very small portion of the Internet. Michael Tung, CEO of Diffbot, ran into this problem while trying to stay on top of class web pages while a student at Stanford. Since the sites didn’t have RSS, he developed a unique algorithm that found updates by looking at the visual layout of the page, as opposed to the HTML. After refining the program over the last two years, Diffbot has released an API that has allowed developers to accomplish some fascinating things with this technology. “We provide technology that allows applications to interpret web pages like a human being,” explains Tung. “We’ve discovered that the entire Internet can be classified into about 30 different page types. What that means is that even though there’s essentially an infinite number of web pages on the web, there are certain common layouts and ways humans structure web pages that are understandable.” Rather than looking at the tags or markup within a page, Diffbot looks at things like the X and Y coordinates for different parts of a page, the amount of screen real estate that each part is given, how a certain part is positioned relative to everything else on the page, and what kind of fonts and borders are used. Diffbot is developing an API for each type of page and currently has APIs available for both front pages and article pages. “Developers are always trying to use web data, for …

Advances in telecommunications and in computer technology have brought us to the

information revolution. The rapid advancement of the telephone, cable,

satellite and computer networks, combined with the help of technological

breakthroughs in computer processing speed, and information storage, has lead us

to the latest revolution, and also the newest style of crime, “computer crime”.

The following information will provide you with evidence that without reasonable

doubt, computer crime is on the increase in the following areas: hackers,

hardware theft, software piracy and the information highway. This information

is gathered from expert sources such as researchers, journalists, and others

involved in the field.

Computer crimes are often heard a lot about in the news. When you ask someone

why he/she robbed banks, they world replied, “Because that’s where the money

is.” Today’s criminals have learned where the money is. Instead of settling

for a few thousand dollars in a bank robbery, those with enough computer

knowledge can walk away from a computer crime with many millions. The National

Computer Crimes Squad estimates that between 85 and 97 percent of computer

crimes are not even detected. Fewer than 10 percent of all computer crimes are

reported this is mainly because organizations fear that their employees, clients,

and stockholders will lose faith in them if they admit that their computers have

been attacked. And few of the crimes that are reported are ever solved.

Hacking was once a term that was used to describe someone with a great deal of

knowledge with computers. Since then the definition has seriously changed. In

every neighborhood there are criminals, so you could say that hackers are the

criminals of the computers around us. There has been a great increase in the

number of computer break-ins since the Internet became popular.

How serious is hacking? In 1989, the Computer Emergency Response Team, a

organization that monitors computer security issues in North America said that

they had 132 cases involving computer break-ins. In 1994 alone they had some

2,341 cases, that’s almost an 1800% increase in just 5 years.

Phproxy is a particular type of proxy site. It helps the user to access the websites that are somehow blocked by the content filters, firewalls or something else. Often you will face problem in entering the websites like Facebook, MySpace if you do not have authentic login id and password. There are other sites as well where unauthorized entry is strictly prohibited.

The reason is that they contain many secured information which, if leaked can cause severe security threats and harm. These are the cases where the Phproxy websites play their role. These are the proxy sites which will allow you to enter these sites with out any restrictions and this is why they are the hackers’ favorite.

But generally these Phproxy sites are used by the young people who do not have an easy access to the adult sites. But then again if an efficient hacker is employed by a small company to collect the secret information from its rival’s website they can do a great job using the Phproxy sites.

There are certain countries where the government tries to hide some of the sites from the residents of the country. These could be sites that feature the news and information from other countries or the same about their own country. It can happen only if the servers and internet connections are handled by the government itself. This is time when the Phproxy websites can help you in a great way.

You can view all blocked sites if you know how to use the Phproxy sites. If you talk about the usage of Phproxy websites in United States then they are mostly used by the hackers or the people who wish to access those sites from where they have been strictly banned.

Using this Phproxy sites make sure that they are not traced by the site owners and there is no way anyone can follow them. But there are chances that your system will get infected by a virus if you are using these Phproxy sites.

You will get to see an entry field at the Phproxy website which will ask for the website address that you wish to enter. But while you enter these sites the Phproxy will delete the important system files from your computer apart from hiding your privacy. They open the new address in a new window and show up the HTML tags, headers and titles.

As many of the readers of this article are aware, computer and internet security is a very serious and complicated concept of the twenty first century. Nearly all of our personal and confidential information is stored in a computer somewhere and these computers must stay secured from hackers and security breaches. It is not uncommon to see security breaches in the news or even to receive notifications from companies holding your information that may have lost it during a security breach. I am writing this article to inform you how and why this happen.

First, let’s start with why people want to steal your information. Some hackers just want to prove that things are possible or to show that they have the power that others don’t. Others like defacing websites in order to pronounce their views. Unfortunately, most breach security to use or sell your information for financial gain. This personal information is most commonly sold right here on the internet on underground forums and chat rooms. Federal agencies do work to shut down and arrest people on a regular basis but because thieves commonly hide their identities using proxy servers and also live in foreign countries; it can make it very difficult for authorities to find the fraudsters.

Personal information can easily be used to apply for credit lines such as credit cards, bank accounts, and loans without the actual person knowing. This can cause blemishes on your credit that take a lot of time and hassle to clear up. If someone has only stolen your credit card or debit card information they are able to make purchases from online, over the phone, and in store but you are generally not held liable for any unauthorized transactions. The purchases are generally reviewed by your bank or credit card company and credited back within a week or two. It is important for people to know that the internet is no more risky than shopping in stores. In fact, the internet is completely designed to keep your information secure and encrypted where as store fronts are not.

The credit card bureaus legally have to allow an American citizen to check their credit once every year at no cost for the use of monitoring your credit. For those of us that are truly interested in active protection, you have several choices of services that will monitor your credit for a small fee but a very large piece of mind.

Almost daily, the news is filled with reports of new types of threats to computers. It is increasingly important for PC owners to be proactive and make sure that they have software installed and running that can help keep their computers safe. While there are many such programs on the market, the Kaspersky internet security package has gained one of the highest ratings for this category of and is considered one of the best ways to protect a personal computer system.

Technology continues to advance rapidly, especially in terms of how people can access the internet and the types of information and multimedia that is available online. At the same time, because of the way that the internet is evolving so quickly, the internet threats that are posed to computer users by “cyber criminals” and determined hackers is also advancing steadily and it is important to stay on top of the current internet security trends in order to stay ahead of these digital miscreants.

The Kaspersky internet security package is sophisticated software that provides a number of essential features that can significantly reduce the risk of exposure and infection of your computer by internet viruses. This alone helps to improve the internet security protection that you can enjoy, but the Kaspersky software doesn’t stop there.

The fact is that computer viruses are not the only internet threat these days, nor are they the only tool that cyber criminals use to hack into your personal computer and your life. Other common internet threats are found in things such as phishing schemes and spyware, and hackers who are intent on cracking into your system to search for sensitive financial information or information that will allow them to steal your identity.

If your computer is hacked into by one of these internet gangsters, then any sensitive personal information on your computer, including passwords to your bank accounts and other important data, can easily be accessed and used to steal your identity. The statistics clearly show that identity theft is on the rise, right along with computer internet security issues. It is quickly becoming one of the most common crimes in America.

The Kaspersky security suite will automatically scan any website files and all emails for any type of malware. These are malicious programs that pose threats to your internet safety and these programs come in the form of spyware, adware, and various viruses that are constantly being developed in an attempt to get past the protection internet security you might have in place.

With all of these constant internet threats in mind, the Kaspersky internet security software is programmed to check with the publisher’s website every hour for any new updates and security downloads. As long as the computer is on and has access to the internet, these updates will be automatically downloaded, providing the highest level of protection from new viruses and malware of any company that offers internet security software. Getting such frequent updates will keep your computer protected from even the very latest virus attacks.

You might thing that talking about Rebecca Black at this point is kind of weird, but I really wanted to say that “Dislike all the videos” thing. CopperCab’s hacker, I guess I don’t need to talk how if that is a real hacking the hacker must be retarded, because he basically showed everything that police would need to arrest him. It is public stunt and most people know it now. Another big clue to many people might be that “hacker” din’t pick some more radical things that Michael would have to do. I like how it is the final update, because as he said he doesn’t have time to make any more updates in the future, I’m guess it is because of the anal beads. CopperCab has only week to do all these things and post it on Coppervission, but as Steve said in the video, it wouldn’t be difficult do record these things all at once. I’ll try to keep you updated about the whole situation. TheCuteToby, as I said in the video, we know Toby very well from the past and he was a troll back then and he is a troll now, he managed to piss off few people with his 9/11 video and by some other totally retarded videos.
Whether they own a bird, a cat, dog or an iguana, proud pet parents often take their pets to stores that cater to the needs of this demographic. These pet stores can also be a place to socialize for pet owners as well as a locale for animals to meet and befriend animals.

This fun and friendly environment can make individuals overlook the fact that many of the items in these stores are outrageously over priced. Besides, taking one’s pet to the park can help provide the human and animal social interaction that one may need just as well.

The reality is, in tough economic times, it would be foolish to throw good money after bad for atmosphere.Savvy modern pet lovers have learned that the web has plenty to offer in the realm of pet supplies and at discounted prices that allow you to save money while taking care of your pets needs.

Internet shopping – the future wave has come

The modern day convenience of the internet cannot be understated. Where else can you research a term paper, get a dose of national news and purchase a pair of shoes all in one fell swoop?

When the Internet was first introduced, it was called the information superhighway, but fairly soon pundits were predicting that e-commerce would become the wave of the future. Despite a shaky start up, Internet business did flourish.

Because of a lack of tremendous overhead, these companies can offer merchandise at enormous savings to consumers. People can obtain pet supplies and related items by investigating the Internet businesses that provides these products.

Yet and still, the uninitiated may wonder how safe it is to purchase online and question if what they are getting is high quality.

Secure Socket Layer certificates

During the Internet’s infancy, people were unaware of the dangers hacker represented. They soon learned the hard way however after highly intelligent and sophisticated net users obtained information like credit card numbers and other personal info. This illegally obtained information was used to purchase items and max out credits cards, but because the technology was new at the time, innocent victims were left footing the bill.

This is why Netscape devised Secure Socket Layer or SSL s certificates. Used to encrypt messages, these certificates protect your information by making it unintelligible to would be hackers. Even those of some skill cannot break these complex codes.

With this in mind, you can rest assured that your identity and your credit card numbers are protected. Just be sure to locate the SSL certificate on the main webpage so you can verify its authenticity. You can do this by clicking on the icon. A date should pop up-if the date is not current, the site is not protected and you should move on.

Guaranteeing quality

Individuals who use the Internet to do most of their shopping have learned a trick or two of the endeavor. Foremost among these tricks is to ensure that the website offers contact information.

If you can’t easily find information on the site then it may not be legitimate. Always look for a physical address, email and phone number. If the site can’t even provide that much information, it is suspect.

Check all information out with the BBC prior to purchase.

When you locate the info call, email the company and speak to a representative. By doing this, you can assert that the business exists. You can also find a bit more about the inventory they carry as well.

Luckily 99.9 percent of businesses located online are legitimate and the more you buy pet products online the faster you will be able to ferret out the bogus businesses from the legitimate ones.

Save on gas and money

With energy fluctuating and uncertainty about the future of bio fuels emerging, there is something to be said for limiting travel by car.

By purchasing your pet products via the internet you save on fuel costs. You can also locate great bargains which, once again, enable you to save a bit of cash. This is because there is less overhead with a internet business, especially one that doesn’t have a free standing building to pay rent on – in fact, many of these businesses are run straight out of the home, with distribution coming from a third party seller.

This is often the less expensive route to go and the savings are literally passed on to the consumer. If you find a place where you get great pet supplies, top notch service, fast delivery and fair prices, stick with them – not all Internet companies are made equal and ones that offer these things should be bookmarked and used often.

Online research

Another positive aspect of buying pet supplies online is that you can research the products you’d like to buy and well as the company you wish to purchase the items from.

For instance, if you wish to buy a cat carrier you can do a bit of comparison shopping or locate reviews that steer you towards more popular choices. You can also learn about the best more reliable places to buy pet related items online from other pet lovers.

More time with your pet

Running around town trying to locate necessities can seriously cut into quality time with your pet. Purchasing pet supplies online saves time as well as money and allows you to stop and smell the roses with your trusted companion.

There are so many reasons why buying pet supplies online is a good idea. For any neophyte who will be taking the plunge for the first time, trust your instincts. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.

There are many wonderful sites to choose from in this regard and if you are diligent, you may open the door to a long term relationship with a wonderful pet supply store. In turn, you will also free up time to enjoy the things that really matter in life.

Credit Card Storage Safety Net.So have you heard the term ‘Referential Credit Card Processing’ or RCCP? It is a mostly unknown process that some credit card processing centers use to remove the liability of storing credit card data. Here’s how it works…

Consider the new customer that charges his purchase to his VISA card, and wants to use that card for a monthly payment. Historically [or typically] we’d get an authorization from the customer and then store his card data in a myriad of security and encryption mazes designed to thwart every 9 year old hacker from gaining access. Then when the monthly batch process came, we’d look up the credit card information and submit the authorization request. Pretty typical.

Customers and end users like that kind of convenience, but don’t think much about losing their credit card data until after it happens. How about we [as an American business] take a stand against the bad guys and come up with a better way to do this that will ultimately protect our business and our customers.

Take a second to recall the last security breach you heard about on the news – “250,000 credit cards numbers stolen or leaked”. Now what impact would that have on your business? What liability does storing that card data inherently include? How does that swing the balance of power in this new economy? Interestingly enough, most of these breaches target the weakest link…. And avoid the shiny new firewall and intrusion detection systems.

Until recently, there weren’t too many alternatives to storing the data. Regulating bodies like PCI (Payment Card Industry) have a lot to do with the required infrastructure to support the storage of this sensitive data (and for good reason). Experience shows that even the difference in regulations year to year are exponential in the demand they place on your technology budget and personnel so a new environment is needed to virtually eliminate that liability. Enter RCCP. This methodology is pretty simple and very effective. When fully implemented, you will realize a 100% loss of credit card data onsite. That sounded like a negative thing, but this is one ‘loss’ you want. Here’s how it goes:

&nbsp&nbsp 1. Customer charges with his credit card&nbsp&nbsp 2. You transmit the number and a uniqueID to your merchant services group&nbsp&nbsp 3. You store the UniqueID and maybe the last four digits of the card&nbsp&nbsp 4. Recurring charges reference the uniqueID and change the amount to be charged.

Now, next month when you are ready to charge his credit card in some cool batch process built into your billing software, you send the original referenceID and the new amount -NO CREDIT CARD INFORMATION IS SENT. You don’t send it… you don’t store it! In most cases there is a length of time the referenceID will stay alive, but when you’re doing a monthly recurring billing, you shouldn’t bump up against it.Back to PCI for a second. Personal experience resulted in a reduction in spending and effort to 10% of the original cost; 100 pages of compliance questionnaires to 10 pages. So yeah… your security gear looks cool. Flashing lights and all that would make any normal technician stand at attention but lets get real. How about we eliminate the golden egg all together so a modern day Passover happens and we keep our sanity, jobs and restful nights.

Put the hacker out of business… and keep America in it!Dan Ribar dribar@1stguard.com 1st Guard Corporation
