Common sense is crucial for all operating systems, but especially Unix. This means do not share your account to your website with anybody! Also, make sure your computer is not infected with a Trojan before logging in as an administrator! Do not give access to your server to anybody unless you are certain you can trust them. Script kiddies (fake hackers) could easily root your server (gain administrator privileges) with the smallest access to your server possible!

Staying updated is something you should do on all systems, for a web-sever, it’s more manual labor to look for updates. Unfortunately, it is what has to be done to prevent security flaws!

They’ve been exploiting web-browsers with the famous exploit known as “Zeus”. Zeus can exploit browsers on a large scale, so stay updated! Due to the fact their hosting is offshore, security professionals are unable to shut down most of their websites, as the hosting company may not comply in the same language, or even at all.

Due to the fact webbrowser security is not very great right now because of new exploits like Zeus being published at a rapid rate; it is smart to stay updated for your computer will be less vulnerable to attacks.

More and more black-hat organization’s are being founded, almost on a daily basis. It seems as if 50% or more are located in Russia. Currently, our only way to keep everybody secure, is by helping you all out with common computer knowledge, and hopefully giving you some basic pointers that should save you from getting your identity, information, or money stolen.

Do you rely on your anti-virus programs? Well truth is, anti-virus helps, but you should also think “outside of the box”. Who profits the most off of computer viruses? Well, anti-virus companies, and Microsoft. These companies could be using so many other coding techniques to secure your computer from viruses and possible hackers.

Why doesn’t Microsoft and Anti-virus companies use these techniques? Well, they want to keep profiting off of you. There is enough proof around that Microsoft, with all of their coders, techniques, money, and power.. they could easily make their operating system secure. Instead, they keep coming out with more operating systems in which seem to be actually even less secure.

So here is some information to keep your system secure:

If your Anti-virus application tells you that an executable file is safe, well it may not be. Hackers create applications called “packers” or “crypters” in which encrypt the executable, and make them undetectable by anti-virus companies. This is why you should not open a file unless you are certain the person or website you got it from is trust-able.

Vendors offer updates for their software to keep things secure and running smoothly. You should stay updated to stay secure. If you don’t update, your software it can leave you vulnerable for a hacker to gain access to your system.

Many hackers go to various sites and obtain published exploits. Exploits are a piece of software, a chunk of data, or sequence of commands that take advantage of a bug, glitch or vulnerability in order to cause unintended or unanticipated behavior to occur on computer software, hardware, or something electronic. Hackers can then use these exploits to gain access to your system. They can steal confidential data , credit cards, passwords, and they can put a backdoor on your system. A backdoor is a way for a hacker to gain access to your system anytime they want. To stay secure and prevent these things from happening, be sure to update all your software regularly. Most software allows you to update it via a button. If your software doesn’t have an update button, you can go to the vendor’s website of the software you want to update and download all the patches and updates available for it. Doing this will help keep your system secure, thus meaning you will not have to pay a computer technician to repair your computer, or go through your bank because your money has been hijacked!
